The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is home to beautiful
scenery, lakes, streams, waterfalls, beaches, and some of the most breath-taking
autumn colors and the most thrilling snowmobile riding in the world.
On
the north shore, Lake Superior's deep blue crystal clear waters provide refreshing
swimming play and thrilling diving adventures into its depths and oto its many
miles of underwater preserves. In the wintertime, many areas of Lake Superior
freeze and provide miles of ice for snowmobiling, skiing, and fishing.
Some
of the most remarkable visitas are noted below. We invite writers to send us works
about their favorite places.
Snowmobiling
Munising touts more than
500 miles of marked and mapped snowmobile trails leading from one warm haven on
the trail to another. Visitors can stop by the local chamber of commerce for a
snowmobile map, and plan an entire weekend on the trails over a hot cup of coffee
or hot chocolate at one of the local restaurants.
Marquette, Big Bay, and
the Gwinn area provide miles of groomed trails for the novice and pro snowmobile
groups to enjoy. Marquette Mountain (the local ski hill) holds a hill climbing
event each winter.
Escanaba and Gladstone areas host snowmobile riders
during the heart of the winter, as well as several of the races held by MIRA and
other race organizations.
Skiing
Skiers will love Munising, too,
enjoying the miles and miles of cross-country ski trails.
Marquette Mountain,
located just outside of Marquette, Michigan between downtown Marquette and the
airport, provides season-long skiing with daily passes.
Houghton and Hancock,
often referred to as Houghton-Hancock by the locals, is home to Michigan State
Technilogial School, which is often referred to as "The Tech" or "Houghton-Tech",
and many ski and snowmobile trails.
At the east end of the UP, the Copper
Harbor extends the UP's land mass into Lake Superior northward towards Canada.
